Plastic bag ban

Bag the bags!

Business owners in Queensland should prepare for the plastic bag ban that is set to commence on 1 July 2018.

The ban applies to all retail businesses and prevents the use of lightweight plastic bags known as ‘singlet’ bags (those that are less than 35 microns thick, with handles). It includes those bags that are deemed biodegradable, degradable or compostable. If you are unsure whether your existing bags fall within these categories, you should request the specifications from your bag supplier.

If your business continues to supply the banned bags to customers after 1 July, you could be hit with fines of up to $6,095.00 per offence.

The National Retail Association has put together some resources to assist businesses in managing the ban, including factsheets, training kits and signage.
